The ending of our music video
Seb told me yesterday that he has finished editing the ending to our music video. We had to re film the footage for the ending on monday as we wasn't happy with it and it didn't work properly. So now having re filmed that part of our music video and now that Seb has finished editing it we can now upload it and put it into our music video.

Target Audience
Our target audience for our music video would be people that enjoy the rock/alternative genre. Which are mainly people of the younger generation, such as teenagers and young adults so that would be the age group for our target audience.
But it could also be for people who are older and still enjoy that genre of music and that would then cause them to be interested in the song and our music video.
Our target audience could also be people who can relate to the song which is about a guy who is saying he is better off alone without this girl whatever she has done to him. So anyone who has gone through a similar situation to what this song is about will be interested and will take comfort from the song.
People who are a fan of Centrefold or people who have heard of Centrefold could also be a possible target audience. But this is less likely because Centrefold is an unsigned band and they might not be that well known by people but some people out there could be fans which would then create interest and a possible target audience.

Magazine advert first draft
For our magazine advert we have decided to use a background we found on the internet and then we will have a little picture of the front of the digipak in the corner so the people who see the advert in a magazine can see what it looks like.
This is the background we chose:
This is the background we chose:
Once we decided on our background we then put a picture of the front of the cd cover in the corner of the advert and then also wrote 'Centrefolds exclusive new single 'Better Off Alone' next to it. We have also decided to have two separate pictures of the liam and summer our actors which are the couple that were together in our video. We will take pictures of them looking serious and sad as they are not together anymore and we will also have some kind of crack or line between them showing their separation from each other. We still have to take these pictures and somehow find a line or a crack to put in between them.
So far our advert looks like this:
Digipak draft
For our digipak Seb and I decided to overlay two photos of our main character onto a dark background. These pictures would be of the main character smiling and also not smiling so he looks sad.
We then overlaid these two photos on photoshop and turned them into black and white photos. After we done this we then used the magnetic lasso tool to draw around the person and copied and paste it onto our chosen background.
After we pasted the picture onto the background we then went onto a website called 'dafont.com' which is a website full of fonts and we chose the font we liked the most for the title that will go on the front of the cd. After we got the font we then put it onto the background above the pictures and this was our cd cover complete.
This is what it looks like:
We then made the back of the digipak which is using the same background but we will print the lyrics on the back of the song 'Better Off Alone' which is our chosen song. We have also decided to have a picture of one of our actors making a heart shape with her hands and we will put this behind the lyrics as it will make the lyrics stand out. We still have to take a picture of our actor doing this but once we have will put it on the draft for the back of the cd case we have already started.
So far it looks like this:

Problems we encountered
One problem we encountered was the ending of our music video as we couldn't edit it on final cut pro so we had to use a programme called 'after effects' which Seb had to use on his computer at home but then he had a problem trying to find the transition which would create the smash effect. Seb knows how to do it but it takes a while to achieve it so he is still working on it.
What we have done so far and filming tonight!
We have been editing our film to get it to a rough cut stage, which we then showed to the class last wednesday and we got some positive and improvement feedback. For example we got some positive feedback which said we had good editing and good effects. Also this group that gave us feedback liked our song. Another group said that our footage and editing fits the pace of the song, they also said that it is a start of a good narrative and I'm glad they like the narrative because that is the convention of our music video with also some bits of performance. We also used colour corrector and that group managed to notice we used it and liked it.
Another group in our class also enjoyed our editing and the overlaying shots we have included. They also enjoyed the shots we put in black and white and natural light in our shots outside. We also got some improvements that we can do to our music video such as there is a shot of the two boy actors pushing each other and we can improve this by re filming and having the two acors fighting more/more violent towards each other. Another improvement is that we need to add more strength to our narrative and as we are filming tonight and once we edit it in to our music video the narrative will gain strength. We are also in the process of filming our performance or trying to find someone else to do the performance as the actor we decided to do it doesn't feel comfortable doing it.

Filming
We filmed last Sunday with two of our actors as the other actress was ill so we had to change it slightly. We filmed the opening of our music video and several more shots from our storyboard. We are planning to film during the week for the performance part of our music video. Also on Sunday we got some photos of the main actor for our digipack which we started to edit last lesson.

Analysis of digipak
You Me At Six's third album Sinners Never Sleep digipak has a dark tone and colour to it which represents the angry, emotional songs on the album. Also the genre of the bands music is rock/alternative so the digipak colours represents this and also creates a tone/mood for the songs on the album.
The front cover of the album is of a man holding an I.D. board that would be used in a mug shot. But instead of a person's information it has the bands name and also the title of the album. The mug shot front cover also links in with the bands first song on the album 'Loverboy' as that video has the lead singer in a room while being questioned by two policemen as the lead singer sings the song and the policemen mime the song at certain points. Also from the black nails and the black tank top the man is wearing on the front that he is a punk and that punk look is present through the digipak because of the dark colours and the picture on the inside photo of the band.
This is the inside of the digipak and has fingerprints of each band member which then again represents the criminal aspect of the song 'Loverboy' and that the band members have committed some crime to have their fingerprints taken. Also the idea of putting the fingerprints into the CD digipak will make the fans of You Me At Six seem closer to the band as they have the fingerprints of the band members and also something that belongs to the band members which makes it more personal for the fans.
Above is a book that contains the lyrics of all the You Me At Six's songs on the album which will also be a good idea for the fans. Also the photo on the front of the booklet is of the band and the photo uses low key lighting to reflect the rest of the digipak and also the criminal aspect of the song 'Loverboy' and the video. It also reflects the angry and emotional songs that are on the album. It also has a low angle shot which makes the band look like they are towering above everyone else. Also the two CDs also fit in with the dark and punky tone of the digipak as they are black and white.
In the digipak there is also 5 individual photos of each band member in the style of a mug shot holding an I.D. board like in the picture that is the front cover of the digipak. This is also a good idea for the girl fans of You Me At Six because they would like to have a photo of one of the band members on their wall if not all of them not only because they like the album and the songs but also because they like the band members for whatever reason and this will be a good selling point to the female fans.
The overall digipak is a good and creative digipak that all fans of You Me At Six will want to have especially with all the creative parts that fit in with the 'Loverboy' song and also the individual "mug shots" of each band member which will be a good selling point for the female fans. The digipak has lots of good selling points which will help them to sell loads to fans especially female fans.
Filming and Editing.
Having filmed on Saturday 27th October and uploaded the footage we got from that day onto the computer we have now edited that. We was also meant to film on the Thursday of half term but unfortunately I was ill that day and we had to use my house so that meant we couldn't film. Then due to an actor's commitment we couldn't film another day so we have rearranged to film today (Monday 12th) but for some reason, Seb is not here in the lesson and hasn't texted me where he is or why he is not here so filming tonight is not looking very promising as we need to use Seb's camera as we used that last time and because of this we didn't book any other cameras. If we do not film tonight because Seb can't make it then we will have to rearrange a date this week to film asap.
But what we did film in the half term we have edited and is in the places where they go in the music video and we are happy with this edit. We may have to film a part of what we filmed on that day because it didn't quite do what we wanted when he watched it back on the computer so hopefully if we film tonight we will reshoot that.

Shooting Schedule
This is our shooting schedule, the table shows what days each of us can film. Seb and I can film any day but we have decided that saturday's are the best days to film as the actors are also available to film on saturdays as well which is why we have decided to film most of our storyboard and ideas this saturday as Seb and I are both free and so is our two actors Megan and Liam. The other actor Jack is not free this saturday as he has to work but he is normally free on saturdays as he doesn't work every saturday so we will arrange a date in the half term to film the shots that Jack is in with Megan.
Filming
Seb and I were meant to film on saturday (20th) but due to actor's commitments we could not film on this saturday. So we are now filming on this saturday (27th) and hopefully achieve a lot of our storyboard in this time. We will be filming the majority of our shots on saturday apart from the shots thats use one of our actors which cannot make this saturday to film due to work. After we have filmed on saturday we will then be filming on a day in the half term which will be with the actor that cannot make this saturday and also the girlfriend that cheated on her boyfriend. After half term we will then upload and start cutting/editing our footage in the first lesson back.
For this saturday we will need a reflector which will be book nearer the time. We will also need a tripod and a camera which Seb has so we won't need to book them. We will also need a necklace or something significant to the main character that was his girlfriends, will we also need some beer cans or bottles which we can use for a couple of scenes that the main character will use. Another prop we will need is a candle for when we film a shot of the main character and his girlfriend having dinner together from when they were together which will be filmed at my house using my dining table.

Filming plan
My group (me and Sebastian) are hopefully going to film on saturday. We hope to get most of the filming done on that day depending on the actors and the weather. If not we will film another day to make up for it. We have already got cameras and tripods for saturday and we will be booking some lights and reflectors as well.
Storyboard
This is the storyboard for our music video. The storyboard shows a range of shots and ideas for our music video. We are using close ups to show the emotion of the characters to the viewers. The arrows on the shots of the character lip syncing show the direction in which the camera will be moving. The small black arrows show the direction in which way the character will be moving.

Storyboarding and actors!
One of the boys will be the main character who will have to act quite angry and emotional at the beginning of the video and then will change to happy towards the end of the video, the actor will also have to lip sync so we took this into consideration when choosing the actor, the actor we chose for this role is in a band so hopefully he should be able to lip sync realistically.
the video is centred around a couple that had been together, we needed a girl to be the ex girlfriend of the main character, as our actor has a girlfriend we decided to use her because it would be more likely to able to use them and they wouldn't be afraid to act around each other as they know each other very well. The other boy we have decided to use is not going to be in the music video apart from two scenes which are only going to amount to a tiny portion to the music video.
Once we have asked and got permission to use the other actors in our music video we hopefully make a schedule that will show when me and Seb plus our actors are free to film our music video.

Pitch and questionnaire.
To present our ideas to the class and get feedback we had to create a pitch that will tell the class our ideas for the music video, information about the song, any editing that we might do and also our locations/props.
This is our pitch:
The pitch explains briefly our ideas for the music video, the editing/effects that we are hoping to use, storyline, lighting and location/props.
To get audience feedback we created a questionnaire to see what people think of our ideas for the music video and just the music video overall.
Questionnaire:
The feedback from the class was mostly good's and okay's for the song overall and the ideas/storyline for the music video. This could be an area to improve a little bit to make a better music video. However we did get a few excellent's for the editing/video effects which clearly shows the ideas we have had for our editing/video effects prove to be the strongest of our ideas and that if we achieve what if we have planned in terms of the editing and the video effects they should look really good and effective.
Centrefold- Better Off Alone
The song we have chosen for our music video is Better Off Alone by Centrefold. We took quite a while picking our song and originally planned on using a song by a band called Hinder. However the only problem with that was they are a copyrighted band and we thought we could get permission to use their song but even though we tried to make contact with them they unfortunately didn't reply so we decided to search for artists which aren't copyrighted which then led us to Centrefold.
![]() |
| Centrefold |
Click here to listen to the song!
The genre of the song is rock/alternative and the music video is going to be a narrative structured video which amplifies the lyrics and the genre of the song. The storyline of the video is quite simple, the main character has been cheated on by his girlfriend and in the video the character is shown to be very angry about this while his girlfriend is clearly trying to make him jealous and making it harder for him to move on from her.

Beyonce's star image
Beyonce's star image is constructed through different items such as music videos, album covers and websites. It can also be constructed through interviews, gossip, photos etc.
The music video I have decided to use to show how Beyonce's star image is constructed is 'Run the world'. The types of clothes she wears and the dancing sexualises throughout Beyonce's image in this music video. Also the extra girls dancing with Beyonce are also wearing similar types of clothing and dancing similarly. Beyonce's facial expressions and actions such as her dancing etc gets her attention from men in the video and probably also men watching the video which is voyeurism. There are lots of voyeurism in this music video as all of the men are watching Beyonce and the other girls dancing with Beyonce. The outfits that Beyonce and the rest of the girls wear show a lot of flesh creating a sexy look for them. Also the fact they are dancing in these outfits help the idea of sexy. The star image of Beyonce in this music video is sexual, dominant and powerful. The body language/actions, dancing and costumes reflect this and help to create this image. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBmMU_iwe6U
The album cover again reflects Beyonce's star image of sexy. For example on the album cover she is wearing just a fur vest which means a lot of men will look at this because she is showing a lot flesh, which makes it voyeurism because she is on display and sexualised through her clothing. Also make up helps her image as well. The way she poses with her arms above her head is as if she is showing off her body, which makes her image sexy by her clothes, make up and body language. This look is then made appealing to the consumers particularly men because of the way she looks and what she is wearing.
On Beyonce's official website there is a picture at the top which you can't help but notice, this picture draws more attention to her as she is laying down, looking at the camera wearing little clothing make her look sexy to the men which is again part of her star image. Also on the website there is a section where there is photos of Beyonce. Many of these photos through make up and body language etc appear to make her look sexy to the men and this is a part of her star image as the music video, album cover and website all do this and contribute to her star image. http://www.beyonceonline.com/us
This interview is different to all the other pieces of research as the music video, album cover and website all present her to be sexy. But in this interview it focuses on her being a mum and her motherly instinct as she says she would like more children. This piece of research has less voyeurism and focuses less on her normal star image of sexy. But however it still refers to her normal star image such as getting into shape again after being pregnant so she can do a show after one year of not doing a show which means she wants to look good and her usual sexy image when she does it. The interview also refers to her outfit which is a long dress but its see through in places to show her flesh, these outfits are also a part of how her star image is constructed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bbTld2cJqM
Another item of research is an advert for Beyonce's first perfume advert called heat in the advert Beyonce is wearing a short red dress which is revealing at the front and shows a lot of flesh. This is a typical outfit of Beyonce's as it shows a lot of flesh and makes her look sexy which is part of her star image. It also makes her appealing to the consumers especially men. The advert also has a red glow to it such as red lighting to reflect the heat of the advert, it also helps Beyonce to look hot in both meanings of the word, which then reflects the name of the perfume Heat. Beyonce's star image is also present in this advert through her clothing and actions etc. The advert had to be show at a later time on TV in the UK so little children have a less chance of seeing it, this reflects the meaning of the advert and also Beyonce's star image in the advert. Beyonce sings the the song that goes with the advert, which helps with the atmosphere of the advert and the lyrics represent the meaning of the advert. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76lPciEip3A
Another advert with Beyonce in is L'oreal Paris true match. This advert is not at all like the advert Beyonce did for her perfume but she stills wears a short revealing dress because these are part of her star image and men will look at her because of this, which is voyeurism. There is also close ups of Beyonce's face which also helps to construct her image as she looks good and part of her star image is looking good in the public eye, whether that's in adverts, music videos or photos etc. Also the advert has helped her to look naturally beautiful and show off her natural beauty, which makes her more appealing to the viewers. The advert also promotes her as well because men who watch the advert would be interested in her because of the way she loos and the image she has created of herself which is mainly sexy and beautiful by wearing outfits that show off her body and causing men to look at her. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWlYrH7SOUA

You Me At Six- Loverboy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFL9wRLpgng&feature=relmfu
The extreme close up shows the angry emotion on the lead singer's face which reflects the song as the song is an angry song, with angry lyrics, so the angry emotion fits.
The police men saying "don't you feel bad" at the same time as Josh is singing it, which represents how they are saying don't you feel bad? to the crime or whatever Josh did wrong.
The evil smile Josh does in the music video reflects the lyrics "I'm the option you shouldn't have chosen" as he sings this he also shakes his head representing the lyrics yet again.
There is a medium shot of the members of the band holding a board around their necks which represents the trouble they are in and how people who are just about to start their prison sentence have pictures taken of them holding the boards.
When the lead singer Josh drops his head in defeat it represents and shows how he gives up on what he was trying to do and accepts his punishment and gives up trying to be innocent.

Nickelback- Lullaby
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OjiOn5s8s8
This music video by Nickelback is a narrative music video with also parts of it being performance. The lyrics of the song match the visuals of the video. The dark lighting at the beginning of the video reflects the situation of the man's wife going into labour and the lighting makes it more dramatic and serious. The close up of the man and the wife holding hands represents their love for each other and how the husband is there for the wife as she is in labour and in a lot of pain. There is also a close up of the women's face which captures her emotion and pain that she is going through and makes the viewers imagine what pain
she is going through.
The medium shot of wife looking at husband before she dies, the emotion on her face presented to the viewers through the medium shot shows that she loves him and the look also says look after our baby.
A long shot is used when the husband is sitting outside the delivery room while the doctors and nurses attend to his wife, the long shot of the man sitting on his own emphasises his isolation and loneliness without his wife.
The lead singer of Nickelback sings "stop thinking about the easy way out" as he is handed the baby, which represents how he shouldn't give up as he has a baby to look after now not just himself, also it represents how his wife would have wanted him to look after the baby and not give up on himself or the baby.
There is also a medium shot of the husband looking at a picture of his wife, clearly showing the emotion as he looks at the picture. The emotion on his face shows how he is going to miss her and that each day is going to be a struggle without her and it also shows that he really loved her and still loves her.
At the end of the video there is a long shot of the man and the baby sitting on the floor with bright lighting, the bright lighting shows how different the situation is compared to what the situation was like at the beginning of the video. The situation/mood changed to a lot happier since the man decided to keep the baby and not give it up for adoption. The lighting reflects this.

My Immortal- Evanescence
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5anLPw0Efmo
The whole music video is in black and white which reflects the lyrics of the song and the tone of the song which is depressing and sad, by having no colour and just black and white makes it more depressing.
The close ups of the singers face clearly shows her emotion on her face and that she is sad, confused and in emotional pain.
The video reflects the lyrics and shows that it illustrate the lyrics as it tells a narrative story of a couple obviously having broken up or they simply lost each other and they are trying to get over each other, the women is obviously in a lot of pain and loss because she is singing about how she held his hands through all of these years and now she is trying to come to terms with the fact he has gone from her life which is clearly represented and shown through the emotions and expressions on her face through the close ups.
The long shots of the man and the women shows their loneliness now they are not together.
The video also has a meaning, which is represented through the lyrics.
The bandages on her hands and feet are given a meaning through the lyrics "these wounds won't seem to heal" and by her wearing the bandages throughout the whole video it represents that.
The long shots and medium shots of her in different places represents that no matter where she goes she always thinks of him and the long shot also represents loneliness and isolation from the man she obviously once loved.
The louder music towards the end of the video such as drums and guitars makes the song less depressing and maybe hopeful that she will get over the loss of the man she might have once loved.

Storyboard for Let Me Sign
This is our storyboard for the music video of Let Me Sign. This is an exact storyboard of what happens in our music video. However we filmed first and then created the storyboard from the video as our orginal idea was to film bits off all the group members individual storyboards and then keep what we liked best, which did work but then made it harder to create the final storyboard afterwards. Next time we will create the storyboard first and then film so we know exactly what to do and a rough idea of what it will look like.
Let Me Sign- Robert Pattinson

This is the song we are using for our music video, we chose this song because our group really likes it and Robert Pattinson. We also chose this song because it is quite short therefore making it easier to make a video for it but also the lyrics tell a good story which is why we decided to do a narrative music video based on the lyrics. Also another reason is Let Me Sign doesn't actually have a music video so it now has a video made by amateurs.

Gadget Show Music Video.
In class we watched the gadget show music video to inspire us to create our own music video in groups, in the style of narrative, performance or abstract. The women on the gadget show chose to do a performance video and she had the use of a band and lots of professional equipment. Whereas the man chose to do an abstract video and he only had use of normal average equipment, which proved you don't have to have expensive, top of the art equipment to produce a music video. It was also a competition between the man and the woman and their music videos were judged at the end of it by two judges who then decided the winner, which resulted in the women winning it in the end.

Three types of music videos.
Narrative- A narrative music video is a video that tells a short story during the duration of the song. This can also be linked to the lyrics and a story can be built from a song and then shown in the video.
example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4y-RzVGrHg
Performance- A performance music video is where the band or singer actually sing the song in the video and you can see them doing this.
example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76RbWuFll0Y
Abstract- A abstract music video is where the video has no link to the lyrics and can be seen random to the viewer.
example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrO4YZeyl0I
However just like films having more than one genre a music video can have more than one type involved so it can be a narrative music video but also a performance, as it can be telling story but also the singer could be singing in it at the same time.

Let Me Sign, Robert Pattinson
For the preliminary task we was asked to create a music video in either narrative, performance or abstract way. My group (Summer, Shelby and I) decided to do a narrative music video based on the song "Let Me Sign" by Robert Pattinson. This song also worked in our favour as it doesn't currently have a music video to go with it therefore everything we planned in our storyboard are our own ideas. Our teacher, Rebecca suggested filming in the park nearby, Chantry park so that is where our location of our music is. The group also decided that we would like a boy to be in our music video as the song is a love song between two lovers, therefore meaning we needed a lover for Summer who is also in the music video.
The group knew what kind of a boy we wanted to be the lover however finding one that fitted the match wasn't so easy! In the end our teacher, Rebecca yet again came up with another idea that we agreed with and that was to use my boyfriend Jack to be the lover in the video. Summer wasn't so keen complaining it would be awkward but with persuasion from me she agreed and Jack agreed to be in the music video. The ideas for the music video came quickly as we listened to the lyrics of the song and then came up with different ideas which fit the lyrics of the song. Such as when Robert sings "standing there by a broken tree" the location of the park came in handy as there was a tree that looked broken and twisted so we filmed that. Also the lyrics " I will wrap you in my arms" we agreed on a long hug to be shown while Robert is singing the lyrics.
The day we filmed was a windy day so the wind was effective for the music video and looks great when we watched it. Also the sky looked moody and a little bit dark that day so that also fitted in with the mood of the song so I quickly filmed that and we used that at the start of the music video.
